A recent study done at Creighton University determined that due to miscalculations the recommended amount of Vitamin D has been underestimated by a factor of 10.  The following article details how they feel the current recommendation for most adults should be around 7000 IU from all sources.  You can derive some Vitamin D from the sun, but supplementation may be necessary.
